NLC Design #14: The George Bed

In this edition of NLC Design I am featuring a work of my own. I designed this bed as an upgrade from my twin and was planning on making it, documenting it and producing an Instructable - well, that didn't happen. I have had no time to make the bed, but I did make the accompanying instruction which are available for download here as a pdf.

The George Bed was designed to be an inexpensive ($260- in materials), do-it-yourself alternative to the very expensive Georg Nelson Case Study Bed.

If you do make it, please send me pics!

NLC Design #11: Vivian Maier

I'm not sure if I have mentioned this, but in August I will be moving from Southern California to Chicago to get my master's degree (in architecture), and I have decided to rejuvenate my personal blog (some how it is still alive and kicking) by taking constant photos of the new city I will be living in and post one per day - the best seven per week.

I was inspired the Chicago street photographer Vivian Maiers' amazing work - read more here.

NLC Design #9: Wind Knitting Factory

This amazing work is from Merel Karhof. The idea is that wind powers a circular knitter an product is periodically harvested and sold as scarves.

I love the illustration so much!

NLC Design #8: Daniel Eatock

Wasn't the last NLC Design about bleeding markers too?

Anyways, this is better.

This is one of Daniel Eatock's Pantone Pen Prints. Basically, what he did was create a little jig that held all of Pantone's pens and rested it on a stack of paper for a month - the resulting prints where numbered 1 through 73 and sold for $1 per their edition number (1/73 = $1.00 and 73/73 = $73.00).

Over the summer I plan on making my own case study bed and making an instructable to go along with it and I was hard pressed to come up with a headboard design - I was considering very clear wood with a laser etched grain pattern, but I wasn't feeling it. Now I think I will use pens and let them bleed for a month. I'm not sure what kind, Pantone is too expensive for a 60" wide headboard. Maybe see the results of some from the 99 cent store. Or maybe just sharpies.

NLC Design #7: Fernando Brízio

These are Fernando Brízio's renewable clothing.

I think this is cool - not so much for dresses, but something else - curtains maybe.

The idea is that the dress is constructed with pockets into which washable felt tip makers are placed, the markers bleed and create a pattern on the dress, and then it is washed and the process starts over again - not sure how renewable that is, but it's cool.

If you google him you will find that her works a lot with bleeding ink.

NLC Design #6: Hakuchi

I've been a fan of Hakuchi's (Shohei Otomo) illustrations for a while now - so when I found the above video, I had to share.

When he whips out that sharping I JUMPED!

NLC Design #5: Inventables

Inventables is an amazing site - so amazing that I found out about it from my pal Pee-wee Herman.

This is what they say about themselves...
Inventables is the innovator’s hardware store.

We sell materials that designers, artists, and inventors use to develop new products and push the boundaries of what's possible.

Above is their Thin Wood Veneer, but that they have other amazing things too - they sell LiTriCon!

And the whole Inventables Team went down to Millennium Park one day to take pics!

NLC Design #4: Sergey G. Makarov

Time to venture into the strange...

Sergey G. Makarov has a web site devoted to his work called Hammer.bas.lv - hammer is used to inject some "pep" in the sense of the way people jumps when they hit their thumbs with a hammer.

I found out about Sergey when looking up tensegrity and found his space architecture (models shown above).

So check out Sergey Makarov's site for some really cool stuff.

NLC Design #3 Monster Brains

It's not really design - on the part of Monster Brains - but you should know about it.

Monster Brains is a blog about monsters. Some are highbrow monsters (like Dougal Dixon's work) and some are lowbrow works (like there seemingly endless listing of VHS box covers).

This brought up some lurid memories of visits to the video store as a kid (movies weren't delivered to you door or screen way back then). And it jogged my memory about a Saturday afternoon movies I saw as a kid, The Nest. The VHS cover literally looks like a giant cockroach is raping a woman.

So check out Monster Brains (the admin there works harder than I do).

NLC Design #1

I've had this idea for about a week now: featuring really cool "Not Laser Cut Design". The idea was prompted in part by the previous post, but after seeing the work of the artist/designer/crafter seen bellow I figured it was time to act. So from now on TLC will be complimented with occasional NLC Design posts - and if they are popular a new NLC blog will grow...

Above is a video of Jimmy McBride featured on etsy where he operates his shop Stellarquilts. read more about him at Jimmymcbride.com or his blog at Intergalactic Transport.

I am blown away by his work and branding - it is amazing. I'm a quilter though I don't spend enough time at it - so far Kodiak is the only quilt I've made. and he makes me want to be a better quilter.
