Frog In a Lightbox

_RLK4917

By Veruca + Veronica (Jackie Gusic and Lauren Ulmer).

Quoteed from NextFab Studio via Flickr:

We started designing a suspended fixture that could be taken seriously. After talking through some options and lights we have come to love, we realized that light fixtures were often taken too seriously and we wanted to do something a little more fun and cheeky. In terms of technique, we first explored the idea of shaving the wood to a thinness that would allow light to pass through it, but we quickly determined that to be unfeasible and turned to using the given materials at face value. We then started thinking of the fixture in terms of layers, and what we could express in layers. We thought the layers of a dissected frog would be recognizable enough, yet unexpected. We think of it as part microscope, part slide viewer…or just a frog in a box.

Kinema

This is a lamp designed by TLC's friend Stuart Fingerhut.

Kinema is a pendant luminaire designed to allow a user to control the intensity of light based on their mood or the environment. Each of Kinema’s rings can be individually “flipped” creating dramatic light and shadow effects. The pendant was assembled from laser cut flexisheets - a product from
Rowmark - to create the two-color effects. Quoted from Stuart's email.

Yu Jordy Fu's Cloud Lamps

Edit: It seems they are not laser cut but hand cut - but they should be laser cut!!!

The Cloud Lamps are laser cut from recycled paper and have a very beautiful, random quality.

Beasties Pendent Shade

This is from Habitat and is NOT laser cut - but it should be. It is acid etched which gives a good deal of distortion and little detail - I mean WTF is that thing in the middle of the second pic? You can read more at NOTCOT where the pics are from.

Laser Cut Light Fixture

Laser Cut Light Fixture, originally uploaded by Mushrie.

Not exactly sure of the process, but I think it would be amazing in another color or material - black or gray, or made out of veneer. Don't you want to touch it?
